Appearing in our morning concert at the Casa Labia Cultural Centre at 10h45 on Thursday 16 February are two outstanding young violinists, namely Talysa Symons and Donné de Kock. They will be accompanied on piano by the well-known Tertia Visser-Downie.

Seventeen-year-old Talysa is currently studying with Prof. Jack de Wet. She has won numerous Gold Medals at Eisteddfods, and recorded three CDs at the age of fourteen. She has appeared with several orchestras in this country. Donné, also seventeen, has reached the final round of the Sanlam Music Competition, and in 2010 she was a semi-finalist in the Artscape Youth Music Competition. She has also appeared as soloist with South African orchestras. Their programme will include works by Beethoven, Dohnanyi, Franck, Wieniawski and Greig. Concert tickets are R50. Refreshments are, however, for your own account. The Casa Labia Café opens at 10h00, and will be available to you afterwards as well. If you wish to have lunch, it is advisable to book (021 788 6062).

This year we are presenting FOUR EVENING CONCERTS in collaboration with the Casa Labia Cultural Centre, but held under the auspices of Casa Labia. These concerts will also take place at the Casa Labia. George Hill will present these concerts as well. The dates are 7 March, 23 May, 22 August and 21 November. From 18h00 snacks and drinks will be served (there will be a cash bar as well); and the concert starts at 19h00. It runs for about an hour, with no interval.

The Cape Town City Ballet will be performing TWO BALLETSat the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, situated in Maynardville Park, Wynberg. The spectacular green wooded park has earned it the reputation for is one of the best-loved outdoor theatre venues in the Cape Region. This is a diverse programme, taking the audience from the delightfully wistful SOLITAIRE to the quirky and charming classic, GRADUATION BALL.
SOLITAIRE was first seen in 1956, danced by the Sadler's Wells Ballet in London. The ballet was described by the choreographer, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, as "a kind of game for one", in which a girl tries repeatedly to join in the activities of her friends, but always finds herself alone. Danced to the music of British composer, Sir Malcolm Arnold, this ballet will be taught and staged by the Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Dance, Lynn Wallis.

GRADUATION BALL, the 2nd work on the programme, was created in 1940 by the Russian choreographer, David Lichine, for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. Using music by Johan Strauss II arranged by Antal Duráti, the ballet is set in a Viennese boarding school, where the young girls put on a ball with the cadets of the city's military academy.
